Outstanding high relief altarpiece, depicting Saint George and the dragon, in Lumachella marble. Item of excellent workmanship. The marble is called Lumachella, from “lumaca”, snail, because its colour is similar to that of the snail shell. This marble is quite rare and precious. The high relief comes from the ancient Genoa church in Italy. It was part of a group of sculptures (with Saint Michael the archangel), placed on both sides of an altar, and depicting the victory of Good over Evil. The legend tells of a brave knight who wanted to slay a dragon that was killing people with its breath; he struck the monster with his spear and in return for his bravery asked the citizens to convert and be baptized. This piece dates back to the early 18th century, and is in perfect condition and flawless. A one of a kind! This is a unique piece, hand carved with mastery and very detailed.
